Oak Grove Marathon. CHECK!

Today was a beautiful Fall day for a looong run. The dark, foggy 62 degree weather gave way to a sunrise by mile 7. The air became crisp as temperatures dropped 11 degrees. The wind cheered us on, and the rain was gone. We chatted and exams acquainted, just as at any trail event. There was an optional hill to complete all 17 times...who was with me on that one?!

We had two speedy dudes who lapped us with lengthy, effortless strides. The rest of us held a respectable pace. Our goal was, "Don't get hurt; just get dirt!"

Around hour 4.5 (10am), a troop came in to set up for a serious event! I wished them well, but laughed to myself that a 5k was starting AFTER I had completed a full marathon. I still viewed my own race as a greater success, based on a simple formula: my group had completed over 200 miles, and 50 runners at 3 mile a piece would amount to 150 and some change. Oh yeah, and mine was free.

At any rate, I enjoyed the incredibly appreciative runners, and I will love to to this again!! I always enjoy the tough runners who show up for poster board events. The real ones never complain! And that is what we had today.

Great job to everyone who ran today!!
We had 22 sign up.
Some completed a half, some more or less. Some ran, some used a handcycle.

Email your time if you didn't get to write it on the poster!!!
Whatultra@yahoo.com
Results will be up soon!!!

See ya next time! ( January 11 and /or 25...different locations)

Oak Grove FREE Marathon (& 1/2)

Join us on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Oak Grove Lake Park at 5:30am for a bunch of laps around the beautiful lake!     This will be a super, low-key, laid back event, but there's no reason not to race!!! Make room for turkey week with SEVENTEEN laps around the 1.542 mile lake loop. The course is FLAT and very fine gravel/dirt. The grand total: 26.2 miles (likely a tad more on your app...if less on your device, continue on for a few steps to satisfy that nagging in that stubborn marathon-running brain we are all familiar with). DISTANCE SPLITS for nerds (approx): 1.542, 3.08, 4.6, 6.168, 7.7, 9.25, 10.79, 12.3, 13.8*, 15.4, 16.96, 18.5, 20, 21.58, 23.1, 24.67, 26.214*)

Many can use this as a long run for Seashore Nature Trail 50k in December, one of the largest 31-mile races in the US.
Half marathoners or twenty milerers are welcome!

Finishers for the FULL will write their names and times down at the end on the provided poster for historical (or hysterical) results.

Shoot for 6 hours or less.

Run in either direction..or swtch it up! (Optional small hill parallel to trail at 0.75 mile marker...I'm running it 17 times!! )

50 runners or less, please. We can't storm the others out of the park!

I highly recommend a SHARPIE to keep tallies on your hand of your laps...this has proven to free up epic numbers of brain cells to focus on splits, nutrition, and nature!
It really is a beautiful park. I'm not one for zillions of laps, but I can manage at ths park! there are POTTIES and tables and a shelter. Bring all your snacks and liquids!

REGISTER for free by NOV 20 by emailing your name, age, city, emergency phone #, and distance to: WHATULTRA@yahoo.com. ALL participants in this fun race agree not to hold the city or race director legally responsible for any injury or problem whatsoever.

Juggernaut

Juggernaut Gym Wear was a success!

Our wall squat winners dreaded the 90 degree angle rule on tired legs, holding their poses for 4 minutes (female) and 2:15 (male)!!

Trailrunning Sentiments

Some runs are just great. Energy. Relaxation. Speed. Dirt. The perfect mix. Friends always help, too. I have read many sources that comment on the introversion of runners, but I stand on the side of the extroverts. If I were the only runner in the world, I think that I would quit running. I like people. I like to be included. I like to be available when people need or want me around. Now, I am not at all saying that I want an excuse to quit running anytime soon. Contrarily, I am contentedly hooked on this lifestyle-I mean, hobby. I just love having someone to run alongside. Live alongside.

It has been a month of chaos, but the running has been great. The friends are great. The fam is great.

That's the main thing. The people. Not the silly numbers-that's serious coming from a math person! Not the emotions-that's serious coming from a woman! Not the self esteem. Not the diet. Not the quantity of activities or races. Just the people. The humans. The flesh-intertwined souls that run and breathe and long to be loved and befriended. The imperfect beings who can become the perfect companions.

You gotta love em!

Some phones, like mine, claimed that the loop was 14.9 ish miles. Phones can overestimate. Mapmyrun can underestimate and claim 13.1 miles. I would say it was 14. It's healthy to run extra, too! We love trails!!

A great, hilly run! Thanks, folks!!!! :)

QUAD LONG CREEK trail marathon
Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 6:00am will begin an East Coast epic: a zero dollar marathon. 26.2 (plus-ish) miles on TRAILS in Virginia Beach, VA.
The event (QLC) will take place at First Landing State Park.
You can join us for the 13.1 mile edition...same time...same place.
Jump in the Chesapeake Bay to cool off at the end.
Self-supported run-no ribbons, just wooden posts marking trail forks...knowing the map will help.
This would make an interesting first marathon, but I won't advise against it-it's not in my nature to do so.

Bells Hills 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k RESULTS

Bells Hills Races - 2013 RESULTS

With downpours the hour before the event and threat and sightings of lightning, we had a turnout of  close to half of the 57 registered participants. But it sure was nice to see the dedicated runners out there! With showers here and there, the race progressed. Runners found their way through the open fields and grassy puddles and on to the slew of polychromatic birdhouses at the finish.
Soaked racers stuck around to chat and cheer on people they never met. Runners in the back began to take down streamers and clean up without even thinking about affecting their times.

The finishing champions were:

NO T-SHIRTS
Each runner will have to complete 9 laps in a CLOCKWISE direction. Distances are marked in QUARTER MILE intervals.

Each runner will receive a Sharpie.
After each lap, the runner will place a tick mark on the back of the hand.
When 9 laps are completed, the runner will rush to the POSTER at the finish line and write his/her time on it with the now much despised Sharpie. Mark your time in HOURS:MINUTES:SECONDS.

A water cooler will be provided. And some snacks.
This is a stroller, spectator,  and dog friendly course, being very well packed sand/pebbles. It's also pothole-free. Your kid could ride a bike next to you as you run!!

This leads to my next segment: The HARDCORE Club.
Halfway through the 1.5-mile loop is a small, optional hill just to the right of the trail. It has a picnic table on it. The HARDCORE people will run this hill 9 times...once on each loop. At the end, they receive not a prize, but a privelege. They get to put "HC" next to their time. That's all.

For the not HARDCORE: there is one portajohn on the course.

RUN THIS RACE, even if you did not participate in the Half #1!!!!!! :)

NO T-SHIRTS will be given to participants...just adventure.
Each runner will have to complete 9 laps in a counterclockwise direction. Distances are marked in QUARTER MILE intervals.

Each runner will receive a Sharpie. Arrive early to pick the best color. But not too early because no Sharpie wants to get up at the crack of dawn.

At the start, each runner should have his/her race number written on their right hand.
After each lap, the runner will place a tick mark on the back of the hand. (The hand that you don't write with, of course.) *If cold: partially remove glove, make tick mark, and replace glove.

When 9 laps are completed, the runner will rush to the POSTER at the finish line and write his/her time on it with the now much despised Sharpie. Watches are encouraged. There will be a stopwatch at the finish along with possibly zero volunteers and zero race directors since they will be running. Hopefully no children will come over from the playground to turn off our stopwatch. (Do you sense how laid-back this event is yet? *More to come...) Cheaters will not be allowed back in any race. Remember to mark your time in HOURS:MINUTES:SECONDS.

A water cooler will be provided. And maybe some snacks. We will see.
This is a stroller, spectator,  and dog friendly course, being very well packed sand/pebbles. It's also pothole-free. Your kid could ride a bike next to you as you run.

Note: There will be other humans out and about! They may be running and yet not be one of us. They may be walking. They may be oncoming traffic. They may be angry. They may cheer. Or try to trip you. Be nice to all of these folks. It is a public park. But please do not trip.

This leads to my next segment: The HARDCORE Club.
Halfway through the 1.5-mile loop is a small hill just to the right of the trail. It has a picnic table on it. The HARDCORE people will run this hill 9 times...once on each loop. At the end, they receive not a prize, but a privelege. They get to put "HC" next to their time. That's all.

Recession Running

My hilarious husband regularly reminds fellow citizens about the current recession. At friendly drive ins, he says that he would like extra sauce due to the recession. At Christmas, he jokingly tells family members that they aren't getting anything because of the recession. And in the grocery store, he announces to the line that he sure is glad he brought his Important Person card so that he could save a few dollars in this recession. Now all of this is just in good humor; he is a great sport...not a grump. But there is wisdom in remembering to watch the wallet. I find myself not wanting to run races if it costs actual money. My family could use a half tank of gas, 24 pack of toilet paper, or 6 gallons of milk more than I could selfishly use a spot on the PDF of some  random race results.

With my inspiration from my spouse and with experience running, writing, coaching, directing, cheering, pacing, sweeping, getting lost, working thousands of math problems related to running paces, racing, and losing...I present to you RECESSION RUNNING.
